On 1 September 1914 Martha, the last passenger pigeon, died in Cincinnati Zoo. Once the world’s most abundant bird it fell victim to excessive hunting and deforestation within a few decades. Marc Schlossman photographed passenger pigeons and other now extinct birds in the vaults of various museums in the UK and US and spoke to curators about the processes of extinction.
