Panos photographer Hossein Fatemi, a native of Iran, spent the months after protests erupted over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, gathering and collating the work of hundreds of citizen journalists who were documenting police brutality toward the demonstrators. He also interviewed a nurse who narrates her experiences looking after Reza, an injured protester, who was shot while observing a protest.
His video montage report – Woman Life Freedom – after the chant that came to define the protest movement, was given the World Press Photo 2023 Open Format award for the Asia region.
