In her unique multimedia project “Shifting” Johis Alarcón tells the story of Valentina, a 13 year old girl in Ecuador whose mother is in prison for marijuana possession. Johis met Valentina while she was working with prisoners on artistic projects. The short film combines analog and digital photography, video, animation and audio to give a deeply personal insight into Valentina’s life.
The project was awarded the Open Format prize at this year’s World Press Photo for the South America region.
